Music Lessons & School Workshops That Inspire Confidence and Creativity

I’ve been teaching and mentoring students for over 25 years—and it continues to be one of the most meaningful parts of my career.

Whether I’m working one-on-one in my studio, leading a classroom workshop, or speaking at a conference, I bring heart, creativity, and a whole lot of fun to everything I do.

I’m passionate about helping students find their voice—not just as musicians, but as creative, confident human beings.

My approach is rooted in empowerment, self-expression, and a strong technical foundation.

Many of my students have gone on to become professional performers, recording artists, orchestral players, educators, and arts administrators.

  • “I love going to Rozalind’s for flute lessons. Always warm, welcoming, patient and kind. She gives me goals to achieve and helps me create a step by step plan to get there. She can see where I’m going and she helps me find my way. And that’s how I like to learn. She gives me confidence and celebrates my achievements, even if they are small. She’s always there for me. For my lessons, to encourage me if I need encouragement or even backstage for auditions and performances which is really cool."

    Taylor, Grade 8 Flute Student

  • How incredibly lucky he is to have such an amazing teacher, mentor and friend who goes above and beyond for her students. He knows he has someone who believes in him, who’s got his back and who helps him realize his potential. He has developed so much confidence over the past few years because of the flute. These are the precious gifts that stay for a lifetime.

    Elementary School Music Teacher

  • My daughter, Asha, has been learning the flute with Ms. Rozalind for 8 years! That's a huge commitment for both teacher and student. Ms. Rozalind has all the traits of a fabulous musician. She teaches in the most beautiful and cozy music studio and prepares Asha’s favourite vanilla tea for her lessons. Asha loves her patient and understanding attitude towards her busy schedule as well as her enthusiasm and creativity in all genres of music. Ms. Rozalind has taught Asha to be more focused, disciplined and confident. She’s even inspired her to create her own flute pieces and a Christmas album. What more could you want in a flute teacher?

I’m proud to have received MusicNL’s Music Educator of the Year award, and have been nominated for it multiple times. I’ve also been a finalist for ArtsNL’s Arts in Education Award, which means a great deal to me. These recognitions reflect the love and dedication I pour into every lesson, workshop, and conversation.

    I currently offer:

    • Flute lessons (online and in-person in both St. John’s and Twillingate)

    • Music workshops & masterclasses

    • Keynote concerts & artist talks

    • Career mentorship & entrepreneurship sessions

    • Music technology training (1:1 and group)

I tailor every session to the unique needs of each student or group, whether you’re just starting out or preparing for a professional career in the arts.

I studied flute performance at the University of Toronto, and continued private study with some of the most celebrated flutists in North America, including Robert Cram, Robert Dick, and many others. I’ve been fortunate to attend artist residencies across North America, including The Banff Centre, the Klondike Institute of Art & Culture, Orford Arts Centre, Domaine Forget, and the Atlantic Center for the Arts.

I’ve also performed in masterclasses led by flutists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Patrick Gallois, Robert Langevin, Alain Marion, Robert Aitken, and Trevor Wye.

In addition to my work as an educator, I’m an active performer, recording artist, film composer, and music clinician. My recordings are featured on CBC Radio and community stations across Canada, and I continue to create and perform original music for live audiences, film, and immersive projects.

Teaching is where it all comes together for me—performance, creativity, connection, and growth.

If you're curious about working together, I’d love to hear from you.

  • I work with students of all ages and experience levels, from absolute beginners to seasoned players. Whether it’s preparing for a performance, audition, exam—or simply growing through music—I’m here to support each student in shining their own way.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, I see it as a true privilege to guide others on their musical journey. Helping people grow in skill and confidence, both on and off the stage, is one of the greatest joys of my work.

  • I teach private flute lessons both online and in-person at my cozy downtown music studio in St. John’s, Newfoundland. I also offer lessons in Twillingate during select times of the year.

For those who prefer extra convenience, I’m happy to arrange house visits within the St. John’s area for an additional fee.

  • I teach one hour lessons in my studio on a weekly basis. I also offer online sessions at various lengths.

  • I usually teach on weekdays, both during the day and in the evening.

  • Teaching rates vary based on the type of session—whether it’s weekly private lessons or group workshops in schools.

For full details and current rates, feel free to reach out to me directly. I’d be happy to chat about what you’re looking for and find the best fit for you or your group.

  • Yes, you will, either one that you have rented from a music store, one borrowed from your school or if you're lucky, the one you own! If you are buying your first flute I can help you pick the one that's best for you.

  • Yes, some music will have to be purchased. After your first lesson we will discuss together what music will be needed based on your skill level, what you would like to learn and any other needs. I also recommend bringing a pen, pencil and having a blank notebook to write lesson notes in.

  • Our first lesson is a chance for us to get to know each other and see how we might work together. I’ll likely ask you to play something you enjoy, chat about your musical goals, and hear a bit about what inspires you. I might play something for you too, so you can get a sense of my style and approach.

Feel free to bring any music you're currently working on—I'm comfortable teaching a wide range of styles and love exploring different genres with students.

Most importantly, this is your time. Come with any questions you have—I'm here to support your learning and share what I’ve picked up over the years. I’m really looking forward to making music with you.

  • It really depends on the student. There’s no strict rule for how much you “should” practice—what matters most is your personal goals, how quickly you’d like to progress, and how you absorb new concepts. I’m here to support your journey at a pace that feels right for you.

  • Send me an email at: hello@rozalindmacphail.com or call: 1-709-769-8088.

Once you reach out, you can expect to hear back from me within a week. We’ll schedule an introductory lesson to see if it’s a good fit. If my teaching style resonates with you, we can then find a regular lesson time that works for both of us.
