Biography

Multi award-winning Di Zhao Flutes Artist, Rozalind MacPhail inspires and empowers through live music, film and storytelling. She explores new ways to combine image and sound in works that speak honestly of people, place and the human experience.

  • Rozalind MacPhail is a multi award-winning Di Zhao Flutes artist, singer-songwriter, and interdisciplinary performer who inspires and empowers through live music, film, and storytelling.

A classically trained flutist turned genre-blending singer-songwriter, she has become one of Canada’s most unique and captivating multi-instrumentalist artists - merging image and sound in works that speak honestly of people, place and the human experience.

Based between the vibrant arts scene of St. John’s and the quiet, rural beauty of Twillingate, Newfoundland and Labrador, MacPhail has spent the past two decades performing internationally, composing for film, and releasing a rich catalogue of cinematic, emotionally resonant music.

Her live performances are immersive and deeply moving - layering moody vocals, electrifying flute loops, omnichord and ambient electronics in real time using Ableton Live and effects pedals.

Her sound is a lush and genre-defying blend of folk, indie, electronica, and classical - delivering the emotional intimacy of a singer-songwriter with the innovation of an electroacoustic composer. She was nominated for ECMA’s “Industry Innovator of the Year” in 2023 and received MusicNL’s “Music Educator of the Year” award in 2022.

MacPhail grew up on Toronto Island, a small community nestled in the harbour of Toronto and has lived across Canada. But it was the creative energy and close-knit music community of St. John’s that stole her heart - and became the grounding place for her most ambitious work.

She is currently producing her newest indie folktronica album and film series, PUSH & PULL, in collaboration with Brad Weber (Pick a Piper / Coy Haste / Caribou).

Inspired by her time as artist-in-residence with the Unscripted Digital Arts Festival in Twillingate, the project explores oral histories, memory, and emotional transformation. Each song is paired with a short film, creating an expansive, multimedia experience for the stage and screen. The debut single, “In Perfect Time” (a reimagined cover of Jill Barber’s song), releases in November 2024 with a music video filmed in Twillingate.

The songs and films from PUSH & PULL form the core of MacPhail’s signature keynote concert series, INSPIRATION SOUP - an engaging hybrid performance that blends storytelling, music, and film. Originally developed through the Creative Edge program with Business & Arts NL, the series has been presented at MusicNL Week, CB Nuit, Twillingate Unscripted, and Positive Thinkers NL.

INSPIRATION SOUP is currently preparing to tour Canada, the U.S., Europe, and Scandinavia in 2026/27, offering presenters and audiences a resonant, genre-crossing live experience.

Whether performing in a theatre, a gallery, or a coastal cottage, Rozalind MacPhail offers a performance that connects deeply - through sound, story and a sense of shared humanity.

Sponsored by Di Zhao Flutes

I’m proud to be the first Canadian flutists sponsored by Di Zhao Flutes!

I fell in love with Di Zhao’s instruments the moment I tried them at the National Flute Association Convention in Chicago. These flutes sing to my soul. They are beautifully crafted with such care and precision. To be sponsored by a progressive company like Di Zhao Flutes is a dream come true.

I am proud to stand behind a flute company that focuses on innovation and excellence.

I play these Di Zhao flutes:

  • DZ-B and DZB vertical bass flutes

  • DZ-A 100 alto flute

  • DZP 201 piccolo
