MusicNL Artist Development Grant

Exciting news! I’ve received a MusicNL Artist Development grant to start recording songs for my newest audio-visual project inspired by the Twillingate region, PUSH & PULL. This project features my voice, omnichord, electronics and effected flute with special musical collaborations by music producers Pick A Piper‘s Brad Weber and Terry Barrow. We’ve got a strong team for this one and we’re EXCITED! New music here we come!

CBC Radio’s “First Listen”

Some CBC Newfoundland and Labrador love for the new album, DON’T LET ME FALL TOO FAR. An interview with lovely Weekend AM host, Heather Barrett for “First Listen”. We play some of my tunes and speak about the new album, touring, the gear I use, what it’s like to pursue a music career that’s totally outside of the box and why I love the St. John’s music scene so darn much. https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-72-weekend-am/clip/15745011-rozalind-macphail-plays-the-flute-but-thats-just-her-starting-point read more

Flute Love for “Fragments” on Exclaim and BBC Radio 6

It’s been an exciting time with the highly-anticipated album release of SIGHT by Toronto’s Pick A Piper. Caribou musician, Brad Weber invited me to record flute for his Pick a Piper track, “Fragments”. I sent him my flute takes with a twist. I recorded it for effected alto flute and focused on the percussive sounds I could create from the instrument. Looks like this great track is getting lots of love all over the world, including by the fine folks at Exclaim and BBC Radio 6 Music‘s 6 Music Recommends w/ Tom Ravenscroft. Right on Pick A Piper aka Brad Weber. Digging that the Ali Ryerson Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments alto flute is getting sexy spins around the world. Video Release: “Now Accepting Food Stamps” in The Overcast

I used my Super 8 camera in Wilmington, North Carolina during my Cucalorus Festival Artist Residency and hand-processed three rolls of film with the help of Andre Silva and Mariah Kramer at UNCW Film Studies. Thanks to Dan Brawley in 2014 for giving me his precious rolls of film! “Now Accepting Food Stamps” was my reaction to feeling heartbroken about the poverty and racism I was witnessing down South. With all that’s been going on in our current world climate, it feels right to share this film. https://theovercast.ca/a-sneak-peak-of-rozalind-macphails-ecma-winning-audio-visual-project read more

I am pleased to announce an East Coast Music Association (ECMA) award nomination for my original soundtrack, FROM THE RIVER TO THE OCEAN in Electronic Recording of the Year!!! What a huge honour. I really couldn’t have created this soundtrack without inspiration and support from the Cucalorus Film Festival, MusicNL and the talent of some pretty amazing musicians and engineers: Craig Follett, Brent Beshara, Brad Weber, Justin Merdsoy and Krisjan Leslie. See you in Saint John, New Brunswick for ECMA Week!
