ABOUT THE ALBUM:
“Wow – you had a hell of a ride out there. I can relate living at the boundary of your reserves for so long that it begins to feel normal. An old friend of mine calls it “edgework”.
– Email excerpt from a close friend – December 14, 2006
Edgework is the third chapter of my songwriting journey. It’s a travelling companion for those of you who have dedicated your life to breaking boundaries, for when you need to be reminded that you’re not alone. I give you cross-Canada soundscapes to bring you closer to home, for when you’re feeling disconnected from the world,, too far from those you love. We all have moments when we need to be reminded of the bigger picture. Never give up. You never know who you’ll inspire along the way…
I wrote most of these songs during a time when I was living on the edge, on the edge of fear, of loneliness, of struggling with addiction and of finding a place to belong. I had sacrificed everything to live my dreams and exhausted my reserves to continue.
The year: 2007. I had just finished touring, solo, across the country for four months on the Greyhound bus, experiencing the highs and lows of traveling. Songs were pouring out of me upon my return, songs about longing, about being lost, about finding love and about letting go. I wrote soundscapes inspired by the places I fell in love with, using sound samples I recorded through my looping pedal while traveling.
After touring, I crashed in Seattle with a friend while I attempted to return to a more normal life. My friend had a recording studio in his basement where I spent many hours, obsessively recording the songs I had written on the road, sometimes not leaving the house for days. I was attempting to give my loved ones a CD as a Christmas gift but soon realized it would take me much longer to complete.
Since my songs had been inspired by my cross-Canada adventures, I invited the friends I had connected with along the way to contribute their own parts by upload to the internet. Musicians from all over the country contributed and Edgework was transformed.
By spring, I was on the road again, spending two months completing the album. I edited and mixed with recording engineer Jason Jaknunas in Ottawa, attended the Atlantic Center of the Arts in Florida and hung out with friends and family in Toronto. My sister, Jessica, shared a song with me that she had written for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, an organization which helps children, women, orphans and people living with HIV/AIDS in Africa. As an initiative of the Foundation, the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign raises awareness and mobilizes support for Africa’s grandmothers. Within hours, I had Jessica in the studio, recording her vocals for “Baba’s – Unite Us All”.
6 months later, this cross-Canada adventure is now complete and my loved ones are finally getting their Christmas presents.
