Hello Dear Friends.❤️ I know that I've been p Hello Dear Friends.❤️ I know that I've been pretty quiet lately and I thank all of you who have been reaching out to check in to see how I'm doing. That means so much. I've got a pretty nasty respiratory bug that I've been battling with and am still feeling under the weather. I'm prone to having these things develop into pneumonia so I'm being extra careful. Rest is best right now. Looking forward to catching up with you soon. Much love. 🥰
PUT IT ON PAUSE ❤️ One of our brilliant mento PUT IT ON PAUSE ❤️ One of our brilliant mentors in the ArtsMBA program, @jennifernrosenfeld shared her 4 P's when when it comes to possible options for those tricky crossroad moments we often experience in project management. It totally hit the nail on the head for me so I wanted to share them with you ✨ PUSH THROUGH ✨ PAUSE ✨ PIVET ✨ PULL OUT I can't tell you how many times I've experienced ALL OF THE ABOVE when I've been curating big projects. Right now for example, I've had to PIVET countless times in the process of curating a new audio-visual project. I've had to PULL OUT from aspects that weren't serving our team's vision. Changing timelines constantly. Making those tough choices to let certain people go and figuring out who will be the best to replace them. I've had to PUSH THROUGH when it feels really challenging to keep everyone on the same page. And when burnout hits like it did in a big way for me this past weekend, I've had to put everything on PAUSE to let my body, mind and spirit have time for a refill before pushing back on the accelerator again. Sometimes, no matter what, we need to PUT THINGS ON PAUSE to let things settle and unfold organically. Let time and space do the work for us as we trust that process. Jennifer reminded us that "INVISIBLE PROGRESS IS HAPPENING." You see, I was so caught up with all I had on my problem solving plate that on Day #54 of my practice challenge, I missed practicing my flutes entirely. When I woke up the next morning and realized what I had forgotten, I felt horrible. I felt like I had let myself down in the biggest way. How could I have forgotten something that was so important to me? The thing is, my body, mind and spirit had been screaming at me to put things on PAUSE for a number of months and I kept ignoring it. The warning signs were there. I've been feeling so burnt out from how fast things have been moving that my body hasn't been feeling well. Even with all the yoga, green smoothies and healthy habits, all I've really wanted to do is sleep, rest and shut out the world. 👇 Read more in comment below

IS THIS ENRICHING OR DEPLETING ME? ❤️ Yesterd IS THIS ENRICHING OR DEPLETING ME? ❤️ Yesterday, after experiencing a number of unfortunate circumstances, I had gotten myself so worked up that all I could do was break down in a puddle of tears. I had reached my breaking point. I let all of that drama totally get me down and even worse, I let it alter my sense of safety, self-worth and joy. It felt horrible. I felt totally depleted. It was a big lesson in seeing very clearly that I needed rest and space to recharge. When we're depleted like that, we're not fit to be around anyone. Since then, I've been on a mission to replenish my energy and nourish my soul. I took a hot bubble bath, made a nourishing meal, put on an inspiring podcast, reached out to friends for encouragement, did a hot yoga class, danced to some fun tunes, did breath work, had air fights with my fists to express my frustration and I've played 1 of my very best long notes on each instrument. That's all this girl is doing for the rest of the day. Next is getting into my pj's and streaming a show so that I can turn my mind off until tomorrow. It's Day #50 of my daily practice challenge and I'm learning how important it is to treasure my energy by focusing on what enriches me rather than what depletes me. And when I'm exhausted? Honouring that the best thing I can do for myself and everyone else is rest. How do you replenish your energy? What nourishing habits do you enjoy?
I DID IT ANYWAY ❤️ Today, I REALLY didn't fee I DID IT ANYWAY ❤️ Today, I REALLY didn't feel like practicing. It was a pretty messy scene! I was all sniffly with a big ball of soggy tissues from crying my heart out. Life's definitely been throwing some curveballs. That unpredictable stuff that stops you in your tracks and sends you for a bit of a spin. It's all good. Just not very fun right now. I'm discovering that showing up for myself when I really don't feel like it is making me feel stronger and for that, I am grateful. Day #49 and I haven't missed a day. Proud of myself for that. I love this quote from Denise Duffield-Thomas: "Knock on a dozen doors, and the universe will knock on a thousand for you." Sending hugs and love to anyone who needs the extra encouragement and support today. 🥰
GIVE YOUR VERY BEST AND THEN LET IT GO ❤️ I'v GIVE YOUR VERY BEST AND THEN LET IT GO ❤️ I've been thinking about this constant process we go through as artists as we submit for performing, showcasing, awards, teaching, festivals, grants, scholarships, music sync opportunities and more. There's always something to apply for and there's always so many next steps to take. To top that off, how about the opportunities we hear about at the last minute? The ones that our intuition tell us may be worth those very tight turnarounds. Proposals that take hours and sometimes many months to prepare for. When we go to press "send" or "submit" or place that envelope in the mail, it can feel like such a relief to finally be done with it. It's out of our hands. We can let it go. But do we let it go? It may take many months before we hear anything back, if we hear anything back at all. It can feel totally brutal to wait for news as we dream about the opportunity, especially if it's something we really want. Waiting can totally suck! One thing I've gotten in the habit of doing after submitting something is to make a conscious effort to release all expectations of anything happening. Trusting that if it's meant to happen, I will receive that good news as that opportunity bounces back to me. And when it doesn't happen? I consider it a gift from the universe. Something bigger and better is in store. I just can't see it yet. Sure, some of those rejection emails still sting and for those, I let myself be upset about it for a day and then I move on. I know there's been a lot of rejection for my artist friends lately (including me) so I wanted to put this out there for anyone who may need some extra encouragement. Keep collecting those no's and get excited for what's comin'! 🥰
WE CAN STILL BE A WORK IN PROGRESS AND SERVE OTHER WE CAN STILL BE A WORK IN PROGRESS AND SERVE OTHERS BRILLIANTLY ❤️ As a multi-passionate artist, coach and mentor who wears many different hats in the world, I often have to remind myself of this. I don't have to have all the solutions figured out to serve others brilliantly. I can be loving and have an empowering impact on my clients as I continue to work on myself. When we're flowing with change, we create BIG results. We're always going to be a work in progress and that's a beautiful thing. Actually it's more than beautiful because when we serve others just as we are, without wearing all the masks, it's our authenticity that others connect with the most. Seeing and embracing all of the light and the dark. We don't want to see someone who's got it all figured out. We don't want to see their perfect life. We want to see a real person who's not afraid to share their entire self. I put this out there for anyone who feels like they can't take that big leap or do that big thing because they don't think they have it all figured out. Day #45 of daily practice on all of my flutes and Day #45 of daily practice on all of my flutes and this week has been TOUGH! I feel seriously low energy. Just showing up has been good enough for me. This is what "Plan D" looks like. Rockin' my pjs, the metronome is keeping me good company and I'm givin' 'er what I got. So excited for 2 days in my friend Corey's studio this weekend to focus on ONLY MUSIC!!!! Have a FABULOUS weekend, dear friends. You deserve it! 🥰

A classically-trained flutist, MacPhail layers moody vocals, electrifying flute loops, omnichord and driving electronics through her effects pedals and the digital audio workstation Ableton Live. One of Canada’s most buzzed about Di Zhao Artists, she’s produced numerous solo albums, composed music for film and toured internationally over the last two decades. I AM SORRY. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. THANK YOU. I LOVE Y I AM SORRY. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. THANK YOU. I LOVE YOU. ❤️ This is a deeply personal post. I share this for others who may be dealing with similar feelings and thoughts about people who have hurt them. If you struggle with releasing a past hurt, remember that it's totally ok to take the time you need to process your feelings before making peace with it. Over the past week, I've run into some people who have hurt me to my core and it reminded me that I'm not totally past being hurt from it all. That's the thing about being a part of the arts industry. You never know where or when you're going to run into someone who haunts your past. The same people who deeply hurt me were the very people who everyone in my community was raving about. The best artist. The best collaborator. The best band for your festival. You should book them at your venue. They have the most amazing live energy! They're such stars! It felt so lonely inside to keep that hurt to myself. It ate away at me. Made me feel empty in crowded rooms. It taught me that I have more forgiveness work to do. This is what I've come to terms with: ✨ We're not messed up if we're in a place where forgiveness feels difficult and confusing. ✨ We're not a bad person if we have chosen to forgive the person but don't want to remain in touch with them or be a part of their lives. Sometimes that trust is gone and can't come back. ✨ We're not a bad person if we choose to refrain from connecting in that person's social circles. ✨ Sometimes that wound opens every time we see them. We're not mentally unstable if that happens. We're beautiful humans with big hearts. I practice this Ho'oponopono prayer for forgiveness. To release. To move forward. To cut the cord. To make peace. To choose love. I hope it brings you comfort in your healing journey. 🥰
PICK UP RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT OFF ❤️ Was it ev PICK UP RIGHT WHERE YOU LEFT OFF ❤️ Was it ever a test to see if I could keep to my promise of daily practice while I was away. If I'm totally candid, every plan I had went totally out the window! I remember @merelkriegsman once saying something like this in an interview and it's totally stuck with me ever since: "When life presents you with a shit sandwich, open up a can of instant forgiveness." Despite practicing not looking anything like I was planning, here's what I'm truly proud of accomplishing: ✨ I managed to play 2 out of 4 flutes every day and one day, it was playing "air flute" style as I ran through my scales silently. ✨ I made my omnichord and singing my 4 out of 4 instruments when my larger instruments were too much weight to take in my suitcase. ✨ When I got back too late to practice in my hotel room, I ventured outside and played in the park at 3:30am!!! ✨ I've almost made it through a full day of Zoom calls and meetings after just getting home and I'm forgiving myself for being way too exhausted to do anything but play one scale on each instrument. The fact that I took my instruments out of their cases at all is a WIN! LIFE HAPPENS and sometimes, no matter how much we want it to, it's not going to work in a way for focused practice. The thing is, just showing up, in whatever capacity is a remarkable thing. I'm proud of myself for SHOWING UP for 41 straight days. 324 more to go! 🥰

Despite having to get up super early to head out to Ferryland to work on his first job since being laid off for most of the winter, my husband @joshua_m._caine picked me up at the airport and surprised me with flowers. He is my treasure, my soft place to land and one of the most thoughtful people I am so lucky to have by my side. It's good to be home. ❤️

So many OUTSTANDING showcases by dear friends who are totally making it happen in huge ways for themselves! Congrats to all of my dear friends for putting their whole heart into making the most of it. I may not have won the award but am I ever grateful for the beautiful acknowledgement by my industry peers. I’m so tired that I can barely keep my eyes open!
