Happy New Year! : )

It’s hard to believe that yet another year has passed. I will fondly remember 2009 as my year of traveling. Through traveling, I got to experience so many of Canada’s magical spots and met the most beautiful people along the way. 2009 began with a 3 month residency at the Banff Centre, then a one month residency in the Yukon (Dawson City) and a 6 week cross-Canada tour in the ‘Little Prince’ which took me all the way to St. John’s, Newfoundland. 2009 is also the year that I fell in love with Newfoundland and decided to make it my new home. When I look back, it’s hard to believe that all of that happened in 12 months! Makes me wonder what 2010 is going to be like.

So what’s next? 2010 will be the year of settling my roots here in St. John’s. I begin recording It Is What It Is with Don Ellis this month and will be making it an EP rather than a full-length CD. I’m aiming on releasing the EP in the spring with a tour to Ontario (and perhaps beyond) next fall. It all depends on whether the ‘Little Prince’ stays healthy enough for another long trip (fingers are crossed).

And lastly, I am very excited to announce that I have set up a new teaching studio here in downtown St. John’s! If you’re interested in taking flute lessons, looping lessons (Ableton Live) or music theory lessons, email me at: rozalindmacphail@gmail.com

Fall is here and I’m still in Newfoundland. I am happy to share with everyone that I have chosen to make St. John’s my new home. There’s several reasons why I have decided to stay but the biggest one is that I just LOVE it here. I find it both inspiring, grounding and good for the soul.

Since I haven’t shared much of my new music with you, I thought I would share a new song that I am working on, “Pilgrim.” It’s still in the very rough stages but I thought I would share it with you nonetheless. Thank you to composer/performer/poet Terri Hron who inspired me to write this song with her touching poem, “Pilgrim.”

I’ve been subletting an apartment in downtown St. John’s, Newfoundland for just over a month now. I’m having a fantastic time and must say, I am in love with Newfoundland. Been writing new songs, getting ready for recording and enjoying all that summer has to offer. From whale watching to cooking lobster to picking strawberries, it’s been wonderful and has been exactly what I needed.

I’m taking a bit of a break from the touring lifestyle. I got myself pretty exhausted during the last tour. It’s time to live a more normal life for a bit so that I can get really focused on recording the new album. Nothing like having my own kitchen, bathroom and bedroom! Anyone who has been on the road for a long time understands what I mean. : )

I’ll be performing a few shows in St. John’s over the summer and a few on the mainland in the fall. Check my shows page for dates (more will be announced very soon). Have a fantastic summer everyone!

This is the second short film I have ever made, called, “Macaulay Muse.” Not sure if I should be sharing it with y’all or not but hey, it’s fun to check out the beginning stages of trying out something new.

I filmed this on 8mm and then Scott Amos hand processed it is his basement and transferred it. I set the music to it, on the road in Montreal using my omnichord, frog, glockenspiel and shaker. It’s footage I took in the Macaulay House (Dawson City, Yukon) in April 2009, no editing, just straight footage of the cool things in and outside the house. Lots say the house is haunted. I’d have to agree. The first Mayor of Dawson City used to live there. It was a very inspiring place for me and I am amazed at how many compositions I created during my time there. I scored pieces for short film. It probably goes down as being my most productive residency so far.

While in St. John’s this summer, I plan to be a sponge at the film co-op here called NIFCO. Should be a fun and productive summer!

Wow, is it ever great to be back in St. John’s, Newfoundland for the summer! I forgot just how beautiful this town is and how great the people are, how vibrant the artistic community is. Sometimes I wonder if I am making the right choices when I decide where I am going to live. I was concerned about living in Newfoundland for the summer as I knew that I would have to make a lot of sacrifices to get myself here. But you know what? It was TOTALLY WORTH IT. Actually, even more worth it than I thought it would be. Every Canadian should experience Newfoundland at least once in their lifetime. Newfoundlanders are the most beautiful people I have ever met.

I’m going to begin recording my new full-length album, “It Is What It Is” with recording engineer, Don Ellis very soon. Waiting on a Canada Arts Council grant and am keeping the fingers crossed!

Have an outrageous summer everyone. : )

A little bit of an update of where I am and what I’m up to right now. I just left Toronto, after performing a super fun show at the Cameron House. It warmed my heart to see people sitting on the stairs and on the floor at the front of the stage. I could not have wished for a better turnout. Then I went on to perform at the Black Sheep in Wakefield and once again, had one of the most enjoyable performances of the tour to date. Oh how I love Wakefield and the Black Sheep. What a magical place.

I’m off to Montreal, to open for one of my favourite Montreal bands, Flotilla. We’ll be performing at O Patro Vys on Saturday June 6th. My set will be on the shorter side so make sure to get there early! I’m starting at 9pm. Courtney Wing will follow.
