Looking for some extra motivation for an artistic goal you have in 2020? Here’s a creative challenge to help you pursue your dream!
It’s been an exciting time with the highly-anticipated album release of SIGHT by Toronto’s Pick A Piper. Caribou musician, Brad Weber invited me to record flute for his Pick a Piper track, “Fragments”. I sent him my flute takes with a twist. I recorded it for effected alto flute and focused on the percussive sounds I could create from the instrument. Looks like this great track is getting lots of love all over the world, including by the fine folks at Exclaim and BBC Radio 6 Music‘s 6 Music Recommends w/ Tom Ravenscroft. Right on Pick A Piper aka Brad Weber. Digging that the Ali Ryerson Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments alto flute is getting sexy spins around the world. Playing on P4 Västmanland Sveriges Radio was a heartwarming experience I will always remember. Don’t think I’ve ever felt so nervous performing live on air before. The room was electric! It’s a rare treat when you get to perform the world premiere of a piece in the country where the piece was composed and with your collaborative partners in the room. Sweden’s Mary Read were fantastic! Check out the performances and interviews.. My segment starts around 2/3rds of the way in but I recommend you check out Mary Read too. They are doing something truly unique and special as they mix Swedish folk music with electronics. Tack to Per Erik Jonsson for the excellent engineering! “It reminds me of the type of ethereal sound explored by artists like Kate Bush…The idea of this record being intended for live looping performance by a solo artist continues to haunt my listening experience; I really want to see that show.” Click here to read the review
Our electroacoustic album, LOVE AND LET BE has been nominated for an East Coast Music Association (ECMA) Award!!! We are truly touched our act of love has been nominated for this. Wow!!!
Thanks to MusicNL for the 4 MusicNL Award nominations! I’ve been nominated for “Female Artist of the Year”, “Instrumental Recording of the Year”, “Educator of the Year” and “Side Musician of the Year”. I’m really blown away by this. Thank you to my Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments and MusicNL families who support what I do and help me shine.
It was an honour to present and perform at the National Flute Convention in Orlando, Florida. I spoke on a career panel about entrepreneurship and performed at the showcase for the Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments all-stars at #NFAFlute2018. I wish I could put into words how special the Gemeinhardt flute family is to me. Such wonderful people who warm my heart and make FANTASTIC instruments! Thank you for helping me shine.
Thanks to Encore writer Mel Beasley for this great article about our NC Tour and FROM THE RIVER TO THE OCEAN: http://www.encorepub.com/layers-of-emotion-composer-uses-music-and-film-to-build-a-narrative-on-the-human-experience/
Did it ever warm my heart to see these articles in The Flute View. Check out May’s issue to read the Gemeinhardt Musical Instruments “Flute Maker Spotlight”, an in-depth “Artist Interview” where I talk about looping, the music industry, what “effected flute” means to me and creative/musical inspirations. Also check out “15 Healthy Habits on the Road”. Lots of flute looping goodness in this month’s issue: http://thefluteview.com #flutegirl #Piccflute#GemeinhardtArtist #looping #effectedflute
